This scholarship was established in 1979 after the death of Vermont Game Warden Arnold Magoon who was killed in the line of duty while trying to apprehend a deer poacher. It is a $1000.00 scholarship to be awarded to a high school senior who will be attending a College or Conservation School to major in the study of Forestry, Conservation, Ecology, Fish & Game Management, Biology, or similar subject. It is our intent to award at least one scholarship each year, funds permitting. The number of applicants has varied greatly each year, but 12 would be average.
The Scholarship Administrator works under the direction of the nine members of the Board of Trustee of the Neshobe Sportsman Club. The Board of Trustees is responsible for awarding the scholarship to the applicant(s) who best fits the criteria setup for these funds. Criteria are as follows, in order of priority:
- Son or Daughter of a Vermont Game Warden
- Field of study
- Financial need
- Student attending a post-secondary school located in Vermont
As an applicant you will need to fill out the application form on the next page, provide a letter of recommendation, and write a personal letter including any offices you have held with school or community, why you deserve this scholarship, and what your future educational objectives are. You may also include any furthur information you feel is pertinent. Please send to the Neshobe Sportsman Club, Inc. before April 15th. Scholarship(s) will be awarded, and applicants notified, in May.
The recepient(s) of this scholarship shall write to the Scholarship Administrator upon completion of the first semester of school showing their progress and grades. This information will be shared with the memebers of the Board of Trustees at this time and a $1000.00 check will be forwarded to the recepient. (Please note this is a one time disbursement scholarship.) If distance and time permit, it is hoped that the recepient(s) might appear in person at a meeting of the Neshobe Sportsman Club in lieu of the letter mentioned above.
